Exchange students who do not have their own health coverage:

Must stay on the plan until the end of their exchange term. At the end of their exchange term they can obtain a refund for the months they are no longer a student at SMU by providing proof of their return home.

At that time, they will be provided an opt-out and refund if they have not made any claims on the plan.

Students must visit the office at the beginning of the month that their exchange ends to allow for enough time for the refund to be applied before they leave the country.
Exchange students who have private health insurance:

Only insurance provided by your home university is sufficient to submit an opt-out application.

Insurance purchased on your own, offered through your parents, your employer, or other will not be accepted.

You must provide proof of insurance coverage that meets the below requirements. If the requirements are not met, you will not be opted-out.
Policy document must state:

Policy number

Dates of coverage (must be valid for full duration of study/time in Canada)

Policy docuemnt in English must be provided

Health cards are not accepted.
The policy must provide and state the following:

Minimum of 2 million dollars in coverage in Canadian funds– please consider exchange rates

Coverage for doctor visits, inpatient and outpatient expenses, surgery, lab tests, diagnostic imaging (x-rays), repatriation and medical evacuation.
Your coverage cannot have the following exclusions:

Injury or death while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants, or
-
Injury or death due to self-harm, or attempted self-inflicted injury, attempted suicide or suicide
Eligible exchange students must fill out an opt out form and the form and proof of coverage meeting the above criteria must be sent to healthplan.smusa@smu.ca.
