All students studying at Saint Mary’s University are required to have health insurance and this is the standard across Canadian universities, as healthcare is expensive.
Eligibility & Family Opt-In
All students taking at least one academic credit are automatically billed and enrolled for the Extended Health & Dental plan. This includes Graduate students in continuation (FGSR 9000).
Students can add dependents to their health plan for an additional premium, during the appropriate academic term. Eligibile dependents include common-law partners, spouses, and children.
You can submit an opt-in application for your dependents during the term in which you begin your studies for that academic year:
-
Fall Opt-In: August 15 - September 25
-
Winter Opt-In: December 15 - January 25
-
Spring Opt-In: April 15 - May 25 (no dental coverage available)
-

Opting-Out of the Extended Health and/or Dental Plan:
If you have comparable alternative coverage (usually through a parent, spouse, or work) you may opt-out of the extended health and dental. Students wishing to opt-out with alternative coverage must also submit an opt-out application each academic year.
You can submit an opt-out application during the term in which you begin your studies for that academic year:
